The European Media and Immersion Lab (EMIL) is a pan-European XR Lab network composed of four major European academic institutions, with a mission to accelerate development of XR technologies. EMIL is a consortium of four partners (Aalto University in Finland, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Germany, Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Spain and University of Bath in England) and it is funded under the Horizon Europe program.
XR-driven exergames to revolutionize rehabilitation for the elderly
As everyone knows, we live in an aging society. At Broomx, we want to take a step in the right direction by creating a new form of rehabilitation within elder care. Using innovative exergames, we want to revolutionize the world of elder care.
Project objective
The project tries to elevate the field of elderly rehabilitation to unprecedented levels. It seeks to achieve this through the creation of innovative exergames, tailored for individuals aged 65 and above. By developing these exergames, Broomx aims to address four crucial aspects of recovery: neurorehabilitation, cognitive stimulation, physical exercise, and emotional well-being. By providing a stimulating and interactive platform, Broomx encourages the users to actively work on their recovery.
Context
Using advanced projectors, Broomx seeks to create complete “playrooms” where the exergames will be projected on multiple walls.
Within these spaces, users will receive customized exercises tailored to their needs and living environment. All these exercises will be projected throughout the room and can be performed without the use of other hardware, such as headsets or controllers.
For this project, 6 different exergames will be created and tested in 6 leading healthcare institutions. These will then be evaluated by relevant people within the field.

Project goals
- Developing a platform of interactive immersive “exergames” that address key areas in rehabilitation care for elderly populations: neurorehabilitation, cognitive stimulation, physical exercise, and emotional well-being.
- Fostering emotional motivation, social interaction, and physical exercise to enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for the aging demographic in EU countries.
- By harnessing automatic performance and affect indicators, therapists and caregivers can optimize their workflow, providing tailored assistance and relief from repetitive tasks. This technological integration promises to streamline rehabilitation processes, ultimately enhancing the quality of care delivered to elderly individuals.
